MIGRAIN analysis:
M: Lighting, high key/ low key lighting.
Low angle shots have been used to make the suspects and the ones being targeted look low an helpless. It shows they do not have power whereas in other scenes we see high angle shots making superior people look as if they have power and are in total control of the situation and what is happening.
Close up shot shave been used to enhance the audiences views on the facial expressions we see. These help the audience relate to what and how the characters feel making them engage with them emotionally.
Long shots and medium shots help us as an audience to see what is actually going on in the mise-en-scene. We have a brief over view of what to expect.
We see Muslims who are shown as terrorists or suspects being represented by professionalisms who are superior to them (Police officers etc)
Sound: Non digetic, yet parallel to scenes. Tense music with fast remix is used to pace up the trailer when we hear about more clues. This makes eneigma codes.
I: Aron Govil productions. This institution is owned by Aron Govil.
G: Thriller genre, this is shown through all of the innocence killings of others and the way the issues are handled in society. There are scenes in the trailer which make us think that it does follow thriller conventions. The dark and dimly set scences show us signs a thriller movie would contain. The genre also follows an action genre. This is shown through the action we see in the trailer, We see officers using gun, we hear gun shots. There is also a clip fastly edited in the trailer of explosives, such as firearms, grenades and bombs on a table. This is when they braek in a nd find out about the terrorist groups location of where they rae operating from and that is the evidence they collect. These props are conventions of the movie following the action genre. As well as physically, there is a lot of verbal abuse being shown, which once again highlights the action genre.
R: There are Muslims who are being stereotyped as ‘terrorists’ and they have been represented in a negative way. This can also be seen and noticed by the tagline ‘is it a crime to be a Muslim’ this instantly targets Muslims which makes you wonder how insecure the characters who would be following Islamic teachings would feel. There are many different negative stereotypes, once again of terrorists and extremists.
A: The importance of a trailer is UN describable. This is the one source that will visually attract the movies target market to actually watch the film. On a whole, shoot on sight will appeal to everyone, this means that it will appeal to a wide audience from different multicultural backgrounds. The trailer itself has a wide variety of actors, we see Asians as well as white and black people. Therefore the movie will also be targeted at these people. The mixture of different actors will also bring in more audience for the movie. (Bollywood and Hollywood cast)
I:There are issues such as Muslim extremism and racial profiling which is covered by the movie. The movie gives the audience an overview of what we se through the protagonists eyes. The difficulties he has to face. As he himself is a Muslim it I difficult for him to make the right decision. The usage of Muslim extremism makes us think about how time has changed since terrorism has fallen as such a huge point to look at. We constantly hear about terrorists and with negative stereotypes (every Muslim is a terrorist) it makes it harder to believe what is real. The movies authenticity makes it a success because it follows such real life issues and situations.
N:The opening of the trailer starts with some undercover cops jumping out of a taxi, after being alerted about a suspect. It continues with a fast pace giving us an insight of the three different genres, action, thriller and crime. Tariq Ali has been handed a difficult task, to find out who is behind terrorist attacks taking place In the local community. Every incident leads from one to another, helping uncover the real truth and incidents. The movie is authentic and deeply sympathises with Islam.

Media guradian Review

The movie was reviewed by Peter Bradshaw. He explains a bit about the synopsis of the movie and his view on how he thinks the movie will do. Bradshaw did not give the movie a high rating, at just two stars it would make the viewers think again about watching it.
He also talks about how the movie would not be as successful in the cinemas and would be a more low market type drama perhaps which would best be shown on a tv channel like ITV in the review. Bradshaw then goes on to say how the movie was not that successful although it would be worth watching because of the performances by Nasserudin Shah and Om Puri.
The media guardian review was simple and did not contain much infromation that would have been relevant to my study or fo rme to include.
It was a brief review which only had information on a little about the story and how the characters were played by the bollywood actors.

Rotten Tomatoes Review
This website didn't even have a review for the movie!!
It has a synopsis like the Media Guardian site explaining a bit about the story line. There has not been any reviews added to the site yet a viewer did perosnally write how he had heard bad reviews about the movie, but he felt totally different towards the film when he watched it himself.

IMDB review
This review gives a viewers view of what he thoght about the movie.
It talks about how the movie follwos its genre conventions and how the audience will be left watching in suspense. The viewer also talks about how no one has been able to tackle the issue os racism as well as Jag Mundhra has in this movie.
The only thing which was criticised in the movie was the Sadie Frost's acting and the way the music did not follow the movies conventions. It was apparantly too 'westernised' to follow the islamic culture.

Stereotypes - Pg 94
This page covers what the term stereotypes actually means;
I found it important to understand the terms and its meanings better as my independant study can relate to stereotypes of people from ethnic backgrounds.
I learnt that there are many different characteristics of stereotypes.Stereotypes are and have usually been used as terms to describe certain groups of people (black, white etc)
Stereotypes can be anything from people to actual things.
Groups which can be stereotyped are:Age, Sex, Race, Religion, Vocation, Nationality, Places and things.

Theorists to Consider - Pg 92/93
Propp = His attitudes and beliefs towards the usage of characters and certain character roles.
Levi Strauss = Binary oppositions - Islamic and Western
Rolande Barthes = Enigma codes, the way they are created and how they help the audience resolve the story.
Todorov's Narrative structures.

Gender Studies - Pg 108/109
Feminist Theory
The male Gaze = This links to another part in the book (relationship of women in film Pg 147) As women are used in a certain way to sell the films.
Gender as Performance
Gender As Lifestyle

Representation - Pg 30/31 8/9
The different types of way representation are affected.
This plays a major part to my independent study as i am talking about the representation on a whole and about representation of people from different backgrounds..

Page 230 - Say It Loud! : African-American Audiences, Media, and Identity (2002)
"The characters live in impoverished neighbourhoods where drugs and gang activity are a way of life. Many come from single-parent homes where the father is rarely visible."

Stereotypes always carry within their very representation an implicit narrative."

Poster

This is the movie poster. We can see the man at the top. This is the same innocent man who was shot assumed to be a terrorist and causing the movie to actually start off around him.
We can see how the image is dark and cold feeling at the back and the facial expression shows how the victim must have been shocked as well as in pain about what was happening to him.
The five images at the bottom are of those people who play the most vital roles in the movie. They all have a important role in the movie and have different views on the issues and debates about the innocent killing.

Key Concepts

Media Representations Who is being represented?
There are many people from all types of backgrounds being represented in many different ways. We see Asian people, Black people, White people, People with proffesional careers, People following religion etc.
The fact that I will base my independant study around people from different ethinic minorities will help me as I wil have a wider area to look at. This will benefit me in the sense that i have diffrerent backgrounds to talk about and compare them amongst each other.
In what way?
Some are represented in negative as well as others in positive. Some proffesionalist are shown as the good guys and some as the bad. The comparison of the different people will show how different people from different backgrounds have different beliefs and values. The beliefs and morals of a white person will be far different from an asian person.
By whom?
We are not shown the characters by any one specific person. But we do kind of see a lot through the main protagonist (Tariq Ali's - characters name) eyes. He is faced with hard decisions and many people feel he will side with people of his own ethnic background. He is constantly shown targeted about how he will make the wrong desicion by defending the 'wrong people.'
Why is the subject being represented in this way?
Jag Mundhra has tried by far his best to be as fair as possible on both sides, so everyone from these backgrounds are shown in good and bad lights. It would be wrong to say that all Asians (who are Muslims) are terrorists as that is being stereotypical. Bearing in mind the actual flm is based around terrorism kind of makes the movie the way it is. They have to be Islamaphobic in order for us to see the narrative develop.
Is the representation fair and accurate?
The representation has been tried to be kept at a minimum, so no-one is really represented in a much more bad way however, the movie does constantly target muslims. They are always repeating the fact how muslims are terrorists and constantly show them in a more negative light. atahey young asian males are targeted quite a lot as wel as the preachers in the mosques. The representation of these preachers is far too negative as we are being guided that they are teaching wrong.
Media Languages and Forms
What are the denotative and connotative levels of meaning?

The connative meanigs are things like red for blood and killings. Most of the movie is based around terrorism and the fact that we see a innocent man die in the beggining is literaly why the whole movie begins off. That is its starting point but every clue to the attacks leads to something else.
What is the significance of the text’s connotations?
The connotations are significant and play a vital role as without these it would be unclear to understand what the movie is trying to say ad what message Jag Mundhra is trying to get across to his audience. We see guns connatating violence killings and murder. Blood of those who lost the lives at the attacks and violence which was the root cause by terrorists.
What are the non-verbal structures of meaning in the text (e.g. gesture, facial expression, positional communication, clothing, props etc)?
Everything used in the texts literally matches up and fits in with the actual move. The actors have acted out and lead the roles extremely well which causes the movie to look as realistic as possible.
The characters would all dress in an individual unique style because that is the way they would fit in to the followed role.
What is the significance of mise-en-scene/sets/settings?
If the mise-en-scene is not matching the narrative and what we feel should be going on on the screen the movie will totally confuse the audience and will not have no meaning at all.
What work is being done by the sound track/commentary/language of the text?
As the movie follows a type of bollywood type genre because of the fact that it is directed by an asian director, you would most probably feel to think it would include music, yet the movie only contains soundtracks which kind of shows the damsel in distress type scenario, which makes you feel stressed in that specific situation as you engage and relate to the character and their situation so much.
What are the dominant images and iconography, and what is their relevance to the major themes of the text?
We see how the prffesionalists have a more sense of power of authority. There job role and the way they are seen is dominant in the movie giving them a more glamouros type role. Having said that, there is also a preacher (Om Puri) who is dominant in his society and people higly look up to him and prasie him from the local muslim community.
What sound and visual techniques are used to convey meaning (e.g. camera positioning, editing; the ways that images and sounds are combined to convey meaning)?
There is over a mixture of sound, the sound is diegetic at times as well as non-diegetic and parallel at others. The movie contains a lot of editing styles include fades and cuts with low angle shots making the subjects look superior to those whom have high angle shots making us as an audience look down upon them.
Narrative How is the narrative organised and structured?
The narrative follows a non linear structure, the movie use flashback type scenes. There are scenes which talk about remembering the past (freindship of Naseruddhin Shah and Om Puri in the past)
How is the audience positioned in relation to the narrative?
The audience lmost once engages with the charachters hsow on screen after the man is shot at th underground tube station. We feel for the protagonist and see how much struggles he has to go through in order to be fair by choosing the right path. Even if it means that he may hurt close ones.
How are characters delineated? What is their narrative function? How are heroes and villains created?
Some characters are shown as postive whilst others as negative. We see some characters with proffessional superior roles accusing and assuming for the wrong cause. We see some good muslims whilst some bad muslims. There are many different twists in the story by the use of barthes enigma codes and the movie always leaves you at the edge of your feet. Heroes nd villains are created simply by what they do. The character who instantly is doing good for the public and community will be know as the hero and vice cersa for the villain.
What techniques of identification and alienation are employed? What is the role of such features as sound, music, iconography, genre, mise-en-scene, editing etc within the narrative?
There are different techinques to identify different people. We see it is easy to identify people who look as if they have a serious role and are commited to what they do but on the other hand it is sometimes literally impossible to actually knows whst lies in the heart of another character causing us to be confused and expect the unexpected.
What are the major themes of the narrative? What values/ideologies does it embody?
Th actual narrative is all based around terrorism. This is the one annd only theme the entire movie follows and it is at the heart of the movie. The values and beliefes are different of each character, some feel to do good with their environment whilst others bad
Genre
To which genre does the text belong?
The text consists of three different genres these include Drama, Thriller and Crime
What are the major generic conventions within the text?
That the movie will be to do with crime and will include a lot of violent scenes. It is obvious from the movie posters that the film will be to do with killing - hence the one man in the first clip who is dying. The title itself is Shoot on Sight..with the on in red connotes mrder killing and blood. The typography is big and bold which could mean it is a strong and serious issue that the film is relating to.
What are the major iconographic features of the text?
The images, the text font and typography as well as the different type of hots of image and some p[eople happy yet others serious.
What are the major generic themes?
To what extent are the characters generically determined?
To what extent are the audience’s generic expectations of the text fulfilled or cheated by the text?
Does the text conform to the characteristics of the genre, or does it treat them playfully or ronically?
Does the text feature a star, a director, a writer etc who is strongly associated with the genre? What meanings and associations do they have? Media Institutions What is the institutional source of the text? In what ways has the text been influenced or shaped by the institution which produced it? Is the source a public service or commercial institution? What difference does this make to the text? Who owns and controls the institution concerned and does this matter? How has the text been distributed? Media Values and Ideology What are the major values, ideologies and assumptions underpinning the text or naturalised within it? What criteria have been used for selecting the content presented? Media Audiences To whom is the text addressed? What is the target audience? What assumptions about the audience’s characteristics are implicit within the text? What assumptions about the audience are implicit in the text’s scheduling or positioning? In what conditions is the audience likely to receive the text? Does this impact upon the formal characteristics of the text? What do you know or can you assume about the likely size and constituency of the audience? What are the probable and possible audience readings of the text? How do you, as an audience member, read and evaluate the text? To what extent is your reading and evaluation influenced by your age, gender, background etc?

The Spectator
This is an article which talks about the main reason why the movie was actually made.
I decided to include this link because it will help me use some information to keep my argument
fair and my answer as accurate as possible.

Idea of shoot on sight
This link shows where Mundhra actually came up with the idea and how he worked towards acheiving it.

Western Media and Islam
This link shows information about how peoples views are changing vastly on Islam as a religion. Many people are talking about Typical Muslim Stereotypes and this website gives all answers to stereotyped issues and why it is.

Information on Islam
I went through Mariam's blog briefly and noticed how she was constantly talking about the binary oppositions between Muslims and Westerns. Her blog wil help me a hige ammount and i can link a lot of her research to my text as she also speaks about stereotypes.

Race Relations/Stereotypes
This link explains a little about what stereotypes really are and how they are not all negative stereotypes/ This will help me with my independent study because of the fact that most of my study is actually based around Stereotypes.

Femme Fatale
This link explains where the word originated from. It is a term used to explain women who use their sexuality to gain what they need. This is wise information to use in terms of research and being able to Link it back to my actual study as there are some youth scenes in the material which feel as if they are there for the male gaze.

Young Male Adults
This link explains how youths are being attacked and demonised everyday over issues which could be a very small thing being turned into something major because of the fact that they want to target these youths in a negative way. This is an article which shows how there is nothing. There are many young adults in shoot on sight who are targetted as terrorists.

Teenage Males
This link is also an article form the Daily mirror. It talks about how a teenage boy shot down 7 people. This kind of relates to the text because of the fact that we could see theh young adults in this movie going to extreme lengths because of difficult situations.

Represenation of Youths
This link shows basic information about how teenagers are being steretyped continuosly. They are continuously represented in negative ways and are seen as an easy target.

Title: How are Muslims represented in the Movie Shoot On sight?

Hypothesis: Shoot On sight promotes a typical stereotype of how muslims are being targeted today.

-Media language: Certain scenes on the movie show us different things.
The scenes mis-en-scene matches what is going on throughout the whole movie.
Certain aspects of the film show different things such as the dimly lit lighting shown at times when the scholors are shown in the mosque teaching about terrorism. With contrastingly medium shots and strong lighting showing superior actors making them look magnificant compared to side actors.

-Institution: Focuses on the contemporary arts instititution

-Genre: Crime, Drama and Thriller

-Representation: How are muslims represented in the movie? Are all muslims shown as Terrorists, following the 9/11 and 7/7 bombings?

-Audience: As this movie stars both Hollywood and Bollywood actors it will attract a wide range of target audience.

-Ideology- Shoot On Sight contains many ideological dis-courses, some of these include:

*Racism

The actual movie is based around whether all muslims are terrorists.

*Crime and Punishment

Any person who would be found as a suspect would automatically be questioned by the police. If the suspect is a criminal they would have to be punished by most probably being sentenced to prison.

*Youth/Age

We are shown the younger generation of muslims and their thinking compared to how the elder generation feel and think.

The movie shows men and women working in teh same area of work together heloing each other so we could say that the movie follows femenist ideology, but then we also see scenes where teenage girls are shown negatively and are there to be looked at as sex objects.

-Narrative: Non linear includes flash backs

Media Representations

-Who is being represented?
It would be wrong to just say that the asian community is being represented because not all muslims are asian, so the actual muslim community are being represented more than others .

-In what way?
They are being represented in a negative way with accustations of being terrorists.

-Why is the subject being represented in this way?
The subject is being represented like this to answer the movies tagline question 'Is it a crime to be a muslim'.

-Is the representation fair and accurate?
The representation is not fair and accurate as it is only based around one text.

Shoot On Sight - Trailer 2008

This is the Movie trailer which was aired on tv to give us a taster of what the movie would be. I have chosen to add this clip so you can get an overview and breif outline about the movie.
